Netflix has unveiled a fresh poster for its upcoming revival of the beloved Spy Kids series, introducing us to the latest generation of super spies.

The tagline on the Spy Kids: Armageddon poster declares, “Meet The Next Generation.” This film marks the fifth installment in the enduring franchise and serves as a reboot of the original series that ran from 2001 to 2011. The poster showcases the young protagonists, Patty (played by Everly Carganilla) and Tony Tango-Torrez (played by Connor Esterson), confidently attired in their spy attire, striding away from the apocalyptic chaos unfolding behind them. Accompanying them are their parents, portrayed by Zachary Levi (known for Shazam!) and Gina Rodriguez (famous for Jane the Virgin), as well as a quirky yellow robotic crab.

Spy Kids: Armageddon breathes new life into Robert Rodriguez’s beloved family franchise, which first took flight in 2001 with Spy Kids, featuring Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara as Carmen and Juni Cortez, respectively, and Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as their parents. The inaugural film enjoyed significant commercial success, spawning three sequels: Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002), Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (2011).

Armageddon Represents a Reboot for the Spy Kids Saga The inception of Spy Kids: Armageddon was announced in January 2021 as a collaborative venture involving the franchise’s creator, Robert Rodriguez, Skydance Media, and Spyglass Media Group. Netflix later joined the project in March 2022. The film’s official logline reads, “When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.” The plot bears striking similarities to the first movie, wherein Carmen and Juni were tasked with rescuing their parents after a mission gone awry. This has led fans to speculate whether Armageddon is a continuation of the franchise’s original storyline or if it exists within its distinct universe.

Robert Rodriguez’s Ongoing Passion for Crafting Spy Kids Movies Rodriguez, who co-penned Armageddon alongside his son Racer, recently disclosed the reason behind his enduring commitment to the Spy Kids franchise. It all stems from the profound impact these films have had on families worldwide. “I’ve received countless messages from families expressing their enduring love for these movies throughout the years. Many of the kids who cherished the initial films have now become parents themselves and relish the opportunity to share this cinematic legacy with their own children,” Rodriguez revealed. “On a personal note, this series was inspired by my own upbringing in a bustling family of 10, complete with an FBI special-agent uncle. These films were a collaborative effort between my family and me, making them our equivalent of the James Bond series. Our enthusiasm for continuing these adventures knows no bounds. They empower children and foster strong family bonds.”
