Maintaining the ideal temperature in your bedroom is crucial for achieving a restful night’s sleep, as indicated by a recent research study.
According to the findings, ensuring that your bedroom temperature falls within the range of 20-25°C is pivotal for a satisfactory sleep experience. The study highlighted that older adults experience a decline in sleep quality when exposed to temperatures that are either too high or too low.
The research involved the collection of sleep data from 50 individuals aged 65 and above, with a total of 11,000 nights monitored using sleep tracking devices. The analysis, which was published in the Science of the Total Environment journal, revealed that the most effective sleep occurred when the room temperature was maintained between 20-25°C.
The research team, based at the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Ageing Research in Boston, USA, discovered that a temperature of 20°C was associated with the longest duration of uninterrupted sleep. However, as the temperature rose to 30°C (86°F), there was a notable decline of 5-10% in sleep efficiency.
Earlier studies have indicated that such a decline in sleep efficiency can significantly impact cognitive abilities, stress levels, physical activity, mood, anxiety, and fatigue.
The researchers emphasized that these findings offer an opportunity to enhance sleep quality among the elderly population by creating a more comfortable home environment. Amir Baniassadi, the lead author of the study, cautioned that the results underscore the potential effects of climate change on sleep quality for older individuals.
