Viktor Hovland Secures PGA Tour Finale Victory and $18 Million FedEx Cup Prize
Viktor Hovland, a Norwegian golf sensation, successfully held off a late charge from American golfer Xander Schauffele to clinch victory at the Tour Championship. The event took place at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, and Hovland concluded the tournament with an impressive score of 27 under par.
Hovland’s triumph not only marked his excellence on the course but also made him the third-youngest FedEx Cup champion ever. The coveted victory also came with a substantial $18 million cash prize, an acknowledgment of his exceptional performance.
Reflecting on his win, Hovland expressed his awe at the moment, stating, “It feels surreal to be standing here now. Over the past two weeks, I’ve been playing some of my best golf, and the timing couldn’t have been better, especially in front of such a large audience,” as he shared during the CBS broadcast that followed the conclusion of the PGA Tour finale.
The 25-year-old golfer entered the final round with a solid six-stroke lead, a feat that matched the largest 54-hole lead during the FedEx Cup era. This impressive standing was built upon his 4-under 66 performance in the third round on Saturday.
Following a weather delay lasting one hour and 53 minutes on Sunday, play resumed at the East Lake Golf Club. Schauffele capitalized on the opportunity, birdying seven of the first 12 holes to narrow Hovland’s lead to a mere three strokes.
However, Hovland responded with a strong start, securing birdies on four of the initial six holes. He continued with consistent play, paring his next nine holes. Eventually, he reestablished a five-stroke lead with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. The victory was sealed with a birdie on the 18th hole, securing his position at the top.
Schauffele secured second place with an impressive score of 22 under par, while Wyndham Clark, the 2023 US Open winner, secured third place at 16 under par.
Hovland’s journey to the Tour Championship began as the No. 2 seed, following his triumph at the BMW Championship the previous week. Remarkably, he now joins an elite group of golfers including Tiger Woods, Billy Horschel, and Patrick Cantlay, who have managed to secure victories at both the BMW Championship and the FedEx Cup within the same season.
The tournament featured a substantial prize pool of $75 million. The winner, Hovland, walked away with an impressive $18 million. The runners-up received substantial sums as well, with the second-place golfer earning $6.5 million and the third-place golfer taking home $5 million. Notably, even the golfer finishing in the 10th position earned a significant $1 million prize.
In a unique twist, all 30 players who participated in the weekend event received a share of the prize money, owing to the absence of a cut. The golfer in the 30th position received a respectable $500,000 reward.
The FedExCup Playoffs saw the participation of 70 players who had qualified based on their performance across the PGA Tour season. The playoffs began with the 70-player FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. This was followed by the 50-player BMW Championship at the Olympia Fields Country Club near Chicago, where the winner was awarded quadruple points.
